Welcome to Adult Education at Pikes Peak Library District!

 

Adult Education services are free for library patrons age 17 or older.

 

Which program is right for you?


“I want to earn a high school diploma.”

GED Class

Qualified learners earn a high school equivalency, like the GED. Classes are in-person and online. Learners must come into a library to take placement and progress tests. Learners focus on one subject at a time (math, science, language arts, social studies). Click the link above to learn more and register for class. Registration is open in July and December only.

Best fit for…

  • Adults who started to study for the GED tests and want some additional help.
  • Adults who do not have any (or very few) high school credits.

Career Online High School (COHS)

Qualified learners earn a high school degree and a career certificate. Most work is online, following a study plan. Learners must come into a library to take placement and progress tests. PPLD provides a scholarship for qualified individuals. Click here to learn more and apply.

Best fit for…

  • Adults who completed some high school credits (attended to junior or senior year).
  • Adults who study independently, are self-motivated, and have reliable internet.

“I want to learn English.”

English as a Second Language (ESL)

Qualified adults with beginner or intermediate English learn to listen, read, speak, and write in English. Learners must come into a Library to take placement and progress tests. Classes are in-person and online. Click the link above to learn more and register (sign up) for class. Registration is open in July and December only.

Best fit for…

  • Beginner and intermediate language learners (not open to high advanced learners. Note: Learners with zero English may work with a tutor before beginning class)
  • Adults who can commit to study 8-10 hours a week for 3 months-1 year.

Speak English and Write English Groups

Intermediate and advanced adult English learners practice speaking and listening or reading and writing with English conversation groups and English creative writing groups. Groups meet at various libraries and times. Groups are free and no registration is necessary (no sign up). You can go to more than one group. Click here to find a group near you.

Best fit for…

  • Intermediate and advanced language learners (not open to low beginners.)
  • English learners who finished ESL class or tested too high to qualify for ESL class.

“I want to start a job or career.”

Career Navigator

Adults who are ready for a new job or career can meet with the Career Navigator. Schedule a meeting or drop in during open office hours. The Career Navigator helps patrons research their dream job, find job opportunities in our local area, prepare to apply, and get ready for an interview.

Best fit for…

  • Adults starting a job search or thinking about a career change
  • Adults who already have a resume, cover letter, or job goal and want some additional help

Food Industry Training Class

Qualified learners take a four-week training program to learn skills for work as a prep cook or line cook. Class takes place in the kitchen classroom in Library 21c. Learners earn a ServSafe Food Handler certificate and meet with the Career Navigator to apply for jobs in the food service industry. PPLD interviews and selects qualified participants.   • Adults committed to starting a career in the food service industry.
  • Bussers, fast food workers, servers, and other adults who already work in the food service industry and want to move into a job as a prep cook or line cook.

“I want to become a U.S. Citizen.”

Path to Citizenship Study Group

Adults meet once a week for 12 weeks to study for the U.S. Naturalization test for citizenship. Learners see the material that is on the test, learn how to complete test forms, and practice for an interview. Click here to learn more. Registration is required.

Best fit for…

  • Immigrants to the United States who are ready to apply for (or have already applied for) citizenship.
  • Intermediate and advanced English speakers.

“I want to learn how to use a computer.”

Northstar Computer Series Class

Adults attend classes at the library to learn computer basics, internet basics, email and Word. Classes are at various libraries and various times. Registration is required. Click the link above to sign up for a class OR go to your local library and ask a staff member for help signing up for computer class.

  • Any adult who would like to learn computer basics
  • English language learners are welcome
